AIRPLANE! (USA 1980/PG/89mins)
Although surrealist slapstick had been around before, from The Marx Brothers to Mel Brooks, when the Zucker brothers and Jim Abrahams unleashed Airplane! in 1980, it seemed to launch a whole new genre.
More than simply a spoof of the disaster movie genre, Airplane! sent up cinema itself, breaking through the fourth wall whilst basically breaking wind in the general direction of Hollywood. Casting former matinee idols Leslie Nielsen (fresh from the short-lived TV series, Police Squad, which later hit the big screen as Naked Gun) as the hapless Dr Rumack and Lloyd Bridges as the increasingly toasted airport chief Steve McCroskey were just two of the inspired casting choices here.
Bottom line, this is one of the funniest films ever made – and where better to see it than on a beach in Greystones, at night. Just the way Groucho would have wanted it.
