LOVING VINCENT (Poland/UK/USA/PG/94mins)
Just the sort of biopic that Vincent Willem van Gogh would have loved, given that this ambitious film takes live action and paints every frame in the sort of rich, expressive oils that were the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter’s signature style.
Cinema has been here before – most notably, perhaps, with Richard Linklater’s Waking Life (2001) and A Scanner Darkly (2006) – but here, directors Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman have created a living tribute to one man’s artistic genius. And the results are truly mesmerising.
Which makes it the perfect film to see on the big screen, where there is no escape from all that beauty.
Prepare to be amazed…
