THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (USA/1994/15/142mins)
Of all his many fine films, The Shawshank Redemption is Morgan Freeman’s personal favourite. And it’s not difficult to see why.
Taking on the role of Red – originally an Irishman in Stephen King’s 1982 novel, Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption – Freeman exudes just the right mix of guru and gurrier, the perfect balance between messiah and messer.
Young Tim Robbins does a fine job too, as the banker doing life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover, his pleas of innocence falling on deaf ears.
Back on the big screen as a joint presentation between the Greystones Film Club and FourFront Games on Hillside Road, The Shawshank Redemption is the first of a planned series of much-loved movies under the banner of The Great Escape. Chosen because, of course, FourFront Games are masters of the escape room, with devilish-verging-on-devious challenges and clues leading to your freedom, fame and bragging rights for years to come.
