It’s the Father Ted of stoner movies, Jeff Bridges playing strongly to type as the footloose and jobfree Jeffrey Lebowski – who would really rather you call him The Dude. Or His Dudeness. Or Duder. Or El Duderino, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.
Hard to believe it’s been 20 years since The Coen Brothers followed up their 1996 Oscar-winning noir masterpiece Fargo with this slapstick Carry On, Bridges joined by the likes of John Goodman as the trigger-angry Vietnam vet Walter Sobchak, Steve Buscemi as the cowering Donny and Jon Torturro as convicted pederast Jesus Quintana, amongst many other fine cameos.
Only David Thwelis and Julianne Moore let the side down as thoroughly modernist avant garde artists who sorely need to be punched squarely in the face.
Coming back to the big screen at The Whale, The Dude will be celebrated not only with that 1998 classic but also a pre-screening groovefest of the finest rug-fueled hippy classics on the sound system and, of course, White Russians at the bar.
It’s going to be a memorable night, man. Until the next morning, that is.16
