Greystones Film Club: Smoke Sauna Sisterhood

Estonia’s smoke sauna tradition is on UNESCO’s list of “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. Anna Hint’s award-winning documentary observes a group of women from the Võro community as they share not just the sauna-based rituals, but also their most intimate stories and secrets within the shelter of one such sauna. The result is a journey of cleansing, healing and solidarity.

“★★★ ★ This is a place of cleansing, not just of the body but so much more as this non-intrusive but immersive film gradually reveals.

– Eye For Film

“★★★ ★ This is a film that weaves a spell, the camera resting often not on the woman talking but on the person listening to her, thereby creating the impression of a universal experience of women.” – The Guardian

Estonia’s submission to the 2024 Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film.
