Greystones Film Club: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Monty Python And The Holy Grail [UK/PG/92mins]

If there’s one thing you can be sure about in comedy, it’s that being really, really silly makes it pretty much timeless.

From the Marx Brothers to The Goons and on to Father Ted, at its best, surrealist comedy offers up a drunken child’s eye view of the world.

And back in 1975, the finest drunken children around were Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. And these young sons of The Goons delivered on their Flying Circus sketch show promise with their surprise box-office hit, Monty Python And The Holy Grail [UK/PG/92mins].

Still ranked as one of the greatest comedy movies of all time – ABC in America recently going so far as to rate it the second-best comedy film of all time – this surrealist retelling of the Arthurian legend is jampacked with the sort of memorable, quotable and ridiculously silly comic set pieces that Spike Milligan would have been happy to call his own.

To mark this magnificent film’s 45th anniversary, for one night only, the Greystones Film Club are putting Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Galahad the Pure, Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot and Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Film back up on the big screen where they belong.

And to make the night even more special, Wicklow’s Sean Treacy – recent winner of the Fresh Film Festival’s Young Filmmaker Of The Year – will be premiering his latest short, Broken Reflection, on the night too.

So, for The Knights Who Say ‘Yip!’, get your coconuts out for Friday, February 29th, at 8pm. Your €10 admission comes with a free box of freshly-popped popcorn. And a sword. And a flying cow
