Love According To Dalva (France/15A/87mins)
Opening with the rescue of 12-year-old Dalva from her abusive father, this debut offering from French filmmaker Emmanuelle Nicot may be an uncomfortable watch initially, but its honesty and sensitivity will leave you deeply moved.
Having been groomed by her father to believe that she is half of a great love affair, we follow Dalva as she tries to connect with a real childhood, struggling to make friends at school and at the youth shelter she now lives in.
Zelda Samson gives a riveting performance as Dalva, whilst writer-director Nicot addresses an ugly issue with a strangely beautiful film.
