GFC: Frankenweenie

Frankenweenie (USA/UK/12A/87mins)

Having become something of a surprise cash cow for Disney in the early noughties – a VIP position that would lead to his downfall from cult king, thanks to ugly ‘re-imaginings’ of such classics as Alice In Wonderland (2010) and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (2005) – Tim Burton got to revisit an early 1984 short with the kind of budget and stop-motion skulduggery that had made The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) such a hit.

As the title pretty much reveals, this is all about a little boy who brings his beloved dog back to life through a little Frankenstein fire and lightning fury, the magic turning to tragic before finding its way back to magic again by the closing credits. Sort of.

Part of The Whale’s triple-whammy of Halloween classics, The Nightmare Before Christmas is screening at 4.30pm and The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 8pm, Frankenweenie hits The Whale’s big-screen at 1pm (doors 12pm).
