Chopin and Brahms Piano Trio by the Degani Ensemble

The Degani Ensemble was first formed by Alan Smale and Ruby Ashley in the 1980’s to perform and record a wide range of chamber music for strings and oboe. With RTE they recorded most of this repertoire, and performed in arts centres and at music festivals all over Ireland. For three years from 1986 the group played on the inaugural tours for the Music Network, and 20 years later returned as rostered artists to perform a series of unique concerts with the soprano Cara O’Sullivan, a partnership that has flourished for over twelve seasons.

For four years from 2010 the ensemble presented a series of concerts in association with St Ann’s Church, Dawson St., Dublin, using a variety of instrumental and vocal groupings, and working with prominent soloists including soprano Lynda Lee, pianist Finghin Collins and guitarist Pat Coldrick.

The Degani Piano Trio was formed in 2015, and has performed at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, the Curtis Auditorium in Cork, and has given concerts in Co. Wicklow. In addition to the standard repertoire the trio has joined with oboist Ruby Ashley to perform sonatas from the baroque era and special arrangements of contemporary works. A Degani Trio CD of Haydn’s ‘Gipsy’ Trio and Dvorak’s ‘Dumky’ Trio will be released this year.

We would like to thank Clare Cherry Kinito of the DoMiSo Music School for introducing this wonderful group to The Whale.
