YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’VE GOT

Shadows & Light on keeping the Joni Mitchell flame burning.

As the lady herself teases a return to the stage, on March 8th 2025 at The Whale, Shadows And Light take us through the world of Joni Mitchell.

“Shadows and Light started out as a rehearsal for some sort of gig where we could just play loads of songs we liked,” says Shadows And Light lead vocalist Maura Vambeck, “by the likes of Carole King, Kate Bush, Michael McDonald.

“Turned out, we really liked loads of Joni Mitchell songs. I loved singing the lyrics and the boys loved figuring out her weird and wonderful music on guitar and keyboard.

“Our first gig was part of the Skerries Soundwaves festival, and we had no idea what to expect. I had decided to tell a few stories between songs about some of the mad backgrounds to songs or parts I liked. And the audience loved it; you could’ve heard a pin drop.

“Best feeling ever.

“So we’ve been playing these songs ever since and getting great audiences because people are so happy to hear Joni’s music played live.

“We’ve all been playing music for a long time, and it’s brilliant to play with musicians who want to practice and sound as great as we can.

“I feel very lucky to get the opportunity to sing Joni’s music and it’s a real buzz on stage with the lads.”
