Ahead of her Sunday, March 16th, cellist NAOMI BERRILL charts her musical journey from there to here…
I originally come from Headford, Co. Galway, but now I live in Florence, Italy.
Both my parents taught classical music, and much of the group teaching happened at our house.
I joined these group lessons because I was interested, but also because it was fun participating and learning alongside friends! There I took lessons in guitar, violin, singing and piano.
I began cello at the age of 7, and after winning a Scholarship to attend the RIAM, I travelled up to Dublin every weekend for individual lessons and orchestra. During my school days I also played Irish music, and often performed at the weekend with my brothers and local musicians.
Music was always something I associated with fun and friendships, and so I decided to continue my musical studies abroad, but not too far away!
I moved to Glasgow to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. There my main focus was classical cello, but I enjoyed studying a great mix of musical genres (classical, folk, electroacoustic and jazz). After graduating I continued my studies in Italy and Switzerland.
As a musician I have found myself travelling a unique musical pathway, which began by experimenting with the
use of the cello as an instrument to accompany my voice, then creating arrangements, and later on, writing original music for voice and cello.
So far, I have released four albums. The most recent, Inish, which we perform in trio, will soon be on the road for our second Irish tour – with Lorenzo Pellegrini on voice, guitars and synth, Andrea Beninati on cello, drums and synth, and me on cello and vocals!
Hope to see you on our travels!
