For the six Spanish ladies who make up Zoelas, the key to their musical success is the heady mix of traditional music with modern styles and genres, all topped off with lyrics of their own creation.

 

With the trio of Bruno Villamor, Miguel Varela and Michel Rivadulla accompanying them, the powerful vocal harmonies of Bea Garcia, Érica Garcia, Carmela Mariño, Pilar Naveira, María Bouzas and Patricia Coucheiro create something both deeply familiar and yet thrillingly new.

How intriguing is this Spanish nine-piece? Well, when we went exploring their website, grupozoelas.wixsite.com, translating their original auto-biography into English threw up some interesting Burroughs-cut-up-phrases that made us love them even more. Especially that closing, baffling line, ‘Por iso se producen dramaturxias e varios elementos da escena xogan un papel importante nas pezas, aínda que só sexa de xeio presencial’, which Google translates as, ‘By iso they produce dramaturias and several elements gives scene xogan a role important nas pezas, ainda that only face-to-face sex’…
